Debrecen's first and largest stone theater is located at 10 Kossuth Street. The romantic-style theater containing Moorish and Byzantine elements was built between 1861 and 1865. The Modern and Contemporary Art Center is the second largest exhibition venue in Hungary. The University Square in Debrecen is one of the most famous and important squares in the city. The main building of the University of Debrecen is located here. The square is modeled after French gardens, with bushes and hedges. The special placement of the statues in the square emphasizes that the University of Debrecen undertakes the legacy of the centuries-old teaching tradition of the Reformed College and intends to continue it.
The iconic Kossuth square is located in the wonderful city of Debrecen. The main square of the city with its built heritage is a popular tourist destination among visitors to the city. The square houses the Debrecen Reformed Church, the sculptural composition in memory of Lajos Kossuth, the city coat of arms made of 180,000 pieces of Venetian glass mosaics, the Millennium Fountain and the Aranybika Hotel. The lycium tree is also of botanical interest, the history of which can be read on the plaque.
Piac utca, the most important street of the county seat runs through the square. This square has been designed entirely for pedestrians, only tram No. 1 and, since 2014, tram No. 2 pass through it. On the square renovated in 2001, the wonderful line of linden trees, which starts on Piac Street, continues. All of this shines in wonderful colors that change from season to season. The green lanes are surrounded by a hedge of privet.
Kossuth Square hosts many outdoor events throughout the year. In the summer the Debrecen Flower Carnival takes place here, and during Advent, the city's Christmas tree is erected here.
The Millenium fountain in Debrecen is the largest musical fountain in Hungary. It was handed over in 2001 together with the renovated main square. The fountain was built based on the plans of Antal Pázmándi with the co-creation of glass artist Endre Gaál. The decoration of the Millenium Fountain is the painting entitled Honfogalás which depicts the arrival of the Hungarians, and the phoenix, which is also a symbol of the rebirth of Debrecen.
A full-length bronze statue of Magda Szabó was placed in Kossuth square in front of the Great Reformed Church in Debrecen. It was created by sculptor Aranka E. Lakatos who sculpted the writer in her sixties sitting on a bench with two cats. It is interesting that there are two QR codes on the bench, which, if scanned with a smartphone will allow those interested to hear Magda Szabó's voice.

In the Memorial Garden located between the Great Reformed Church and the College we can see the statue of the Transylvanian prince István Bocskai, which was erected in 1906, on the 300th anniversary of the settlement of the Hajdus as well as the memorial column of the Gallic Arabs, which commemorates the Protestant ministers who were deported from Debrecen during the Counter-Reformation in the 17th century and sentenced to galley slavery. In 2017 a monument made of red marble was placed in the Memorial Garden for the 500th anniversary of the Reformation and the 450th anniversary of the foundation of the Hungarian Reformed Church.
The educational institution which has been operating continuously since 1538 is the cradle of Hungarian culture and has been a national memorial since 2013. For example, Mihály Vitéz Csokonai, Ferenc Kazinczy, János Arany, Ferenc Kölcsey, and Zsigmond Móricz grew up within its walls. The staircase decorated with frescoes leads to the Great Library chosen as one of the most beautiful libraries in the world, with more than six hundred thousand volumes, the Csokonai Room, and the Oratory, which housed the Parliament in 1849.
The small Reformed church in Debrecen stands at the intersection of Piac and Széchenyi streets on Révész Square. The church, originally built in Baroque style, was remodeled in 1876 in Neo-Romanesque style. Its tower was originally covered by an onion-like helmet, but it was damaged by a storm in 1907, and although it was repaired, it was soon completely destroyed by the lowland winds.
The construction of the neo-Gothic church of the Debrecen Kossuth Street Reformed Parish began in 1886 with the donation of the former chief judge István Szombathy and his wife from unplastered red clinker bricks – hence its common name. Its special value is the interior decorated with secco which is unusual for Reformed churches.
The cathedral church of the Catholic diocese of Debrecen-Nyíregyháza. The cathedral was elevated to the rank of a cathedral in 1993 by Pope John Paul II. The church - completed in the Baroque style in 1746 - was destroyed by a terrible fire in 1811 and was rebuilt in the copf style in 1834.
The history of Debrecen's Jews goes back more than 100 years. The first Jewish merchants arrived in the city in the 1780s. The Pásti Street synagogue which is open to everyone was inaugurated in 1902. A Holocaust memorial was created in his yard in memory of the victims of Debrecen.
The classicist-style church is the symbol of the city and the Hungarian Reformed Church - that's why Debrecen is called the Calvinist Rome. Built between 1805 and 1824 the 1,500-square-meter sanctuary witnessed great times: the government of the Hungarian War of Independence of 1848-49, fleeing to Debrecen, announced the dethronement of the House of Habsburg on April 14 1849. and proclaimed the Declaration of Independence.
